DEVRIM ERBIL

Devrim Erbil (b.1937)

Born in 1937, Erbil entered the Painting Department of the Istanbul State Academy of Fine Arts in 1955. In 1959, he founded the Abstractist 7’s group. After graduating, he worked at Bedri Rahmi Eyüboğlu, Cemal Tollu and Cevat Dereli Ateliers. He lived in Spain with an art scholarship given by the Spanish Government in 1965 and continued his research and studies in Paris and London.

In 1979, he was appointed as the Director of the Istanbul Painting and Sculpture Museum. He was promoted to Professor at İ.DGS Academy in 1981. He was appointed as the Head of the Painting Department at Mimar Sinan University, Faculty of Fine Arts in 1985, as the Head of the Department of Fine Arts at Yıldız University in 1988, and as the Assistant Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts at Mimar Sinan University in 1990.

He was honored with the title of State Artist in 1991. Devrim Erbil opened many group exhibitions abroad.

The artist’s works are in Istanbul-Ankara-İzmir Painting and Sculpture Museums, Bucharest Museum of Modern Arts, Ben and Abby Gray Foundation Collection in Banja Luka Umnetnicka Galerija, Ankara National Library Collection` in public institutions and private collections at home and abroad.
