We don’t hesitate to call Sevil Dolmacı 3Cs; colourful, charming and canny as well as her experience in her field. Having served as an art consultant at substantive companies, she confronts us with her own company: Sevil Dolmacı Art Consultancy. This formation is a first in Turkey. If you ask the location of the office, the answer is short: in Narmanlı…* In her office in this historical building rising as if it observed who is doing what, we touched upon many issues ranging from her art consultancy service to her daily rituals. And Buika accompanied us on the background.
How did the idea of establishing this consultancy firm emerge?
Increasing interest in art in the recent years, personal collections’ targeting to institutionalize, the desire of institutions to exist with art and the search of especially foreign companies for a consultancy company operating on an institutional basis allowed me to bring all of my present works under the roof of a company. I combined the consultancy work which I have been performing for rooted collections for many years with an international team and an environment which is complete substitute of a gallery venue in order to institutionalize in Turkey and actualized a new structuring.
How were the reactions of people?
Speaking for the art environment, the establishment attracts a lot of attention in terms of accelerating the environment and binding the relations to each other in a dynamic way. Artists can meet the purchaser directly, those who don’t have any galleries can find a place where they can present their works. I can create common works for projects with galleries and institutions can find other independent and objective institutions. The art environment has livened up due to this establishment in a crisis. Reactions are generally motivating. The sharing attitude makes everyone content.
Could talk about the content and the activity schedule a little?
This place will not display an operation with a gallery mentality. There generally will be organizations to be carried out with Exclusive inventories since it is work with a pre-scheduled appointment system. These are mainly projects which will help artists to be included in the literature. Such as publishing, launching publishment, making new exhibitions meet collectors etc…
Will you also consult for those who will start collecting here?
Being a collector starts with being a good taker. And for starting to take, a professional help is required. An art consultant must firstly determine which style, period or media that the taker is interested and then act accordingly. You must have the applause of the collector/taker and the young talents possessing criteria located or worth locating in the art history. Then the collector can find his way and proceed safely.
What attracts you about this apartment building?
Narmanlı Apartment Building is one of the important structures of 20th century urban architecture. People who resided here are quite interesting. Mithat Cemal Kuntay and Ayşe Kulin are one of them… It is a ravishing space which hasn’t lost the historical fabric with its inner architecture such as high ceilings, ceiling borders and columns. My dream since I moved to Istanbul has been to open a space in relation to contemporary art here and it came true. It is difficult to find a place in such buildings. Our building hosts three contemporary art galleries with its historical fabric.
Do you have any particular interest in architecture? What kind of buildings do you like?
Even though I like old buildings worth living in, modern ones are my favourite. In my opinion, sculptural forms of Narman Foster and Zaha Hadid are completely works of arts.
Can I learn your opinions about the relation of architecture and art?
I am one of those who opt for sticking with postmodernism although alter-modernism has launched out. Synergy of the past and modern has always captivated me. Positioning of 19th century eclectic style architecture and current works in these spaces is the most harmonic synergy that enhances the energy and revealing the aura of the work.
Who are your favourite master and beginner artists?
Among my favourite master artists are Fahrelnissa Zeid, Mubin Orhon, Nejat Melih Devrim, Seyhun Topuz, Ergin İnan, Devrim Erbil, Koray Ariş, Kemal Önsoy, Canan Tolon, Bedri Baykam, Bubi, Ekrem Yalçındağ, Haluk Akakçe, Taner Ceylan and İsmet Doğan. And my favourite beginner artists are Ozan Oganer, Ardan Özmenoğlu, Ebru Yılmaz Kale, Kadir Akyol ve Seydi Murat Koç …
What kind of a decoration does your own house have? Whose works do you have in your house?
Since I am involved in the contemporary art, my house accordingly has contemporary lines and details instinctively. In the living is a massive work of Bubi. There is a work of Ekrem Yalçındağ in the entrance area. A neon work of Saliha Yılmaz, “He Loves Me” is in the kitchen. I have the planes of Seydi Murat Koç and a post-it work of Ardan Özmenoğlu in my study room.
Works of artists such as Kornet, Ömer Uluç, Fehrelnissa Zeid, Ergin İnan and Devrim Erbil and affordable editions are available in the gallery.
