“We Forget to Think We are Born”

Colombian artist Rafael Gomezbarros, who came forward with his installation “House Taken” exhibited in Saatchi Gallery London three times between 2014 and 2015, is coming to Istanbul for his first solo exhibition titled “We Forget to Think We Are Born”. The exhibition at Sevil Dolmacı Art Consultancy will take place in parallel with the 16th Istanbul Biennial between September 9 and October 25, 2019.

Rafael Gomezbarros graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts of Jorge Tadeo Lozano University in 2000. His works, questioning the concepts of individual’s relationship with society, identity and anonymity, migration and memory, based on political conflicts in his native Colombia took part in prominent galleries, museums, and biennials around the world, in countries such as Belgium, Cuba, Austria, Sweden, England, and the USA.

Having had twenty solo exhibitions in his career, Gomezbarros’ works were exhibited at the Biennial de la Habana, Cuba in 2014 and at the Gangwon Biennial, South Korea in 2018. His most famous installation “House Taken” was exhibited in numerous museums and art institutions around the world, including the Capitolio de Colombia building in Bogota, Colombia in 2010 and the Lowry Center building, United Kingdom in 2015.

The exhibition “We Forget to Think We Are Born” curated by Javier Meija is the first solo exhibition of Rafael Gomezbarros in Turkey, where his works titled ‘We Are Numbers‘, ‘House Taken’, ‘We Are Humans‘ and ‘I Eat You Eat, They Eat’ will be shared with art lovers. Based on the damage and violence of the long-standing civil war in Colombia, the exhibition opening at Sevil Dolmacı Art Consultancy on September 9th asks the spectators the following questions and confront them to some of the global issues of our time: “Should we forget the missing?”, “Can we trust one another?”, “Why do we emigrate?” and “Why am I so hungry?”
