Sevil Dolmacı Art Gallery is proud to present Şahin Demir's solo exhibition the Garden of Hollow Times". For his second solo exhibition in the gallery, the artist tackles, with an aggressive expression, global issues such as the increasing weight of ecological problems and their direct impact on our lives.
Demir's first solo exhibition at Sevil Dolmacı Art Gallery and in Istanbul, “Sessizliğin İçinden", was inspired by Pablo Neruda's "Poetry of Silence" from his book Delusions. Dense layers of paint over abstract portraits overflowing from the canvas were in contrast with the artist's previous works. The exhibition also coincided with the artist’s move to Istanbul from Ankara and was well received by the art lovers.
In 2021, for the group exhibition “Everything Has Its Place” curated by Dr. Kathy Battista, Şahin Demir entered a new phase in his artistic practice with his damaged sunflowers, a reference to art history. With this exhibition, by adding the details of his own culture to his distorted and fragmented compositions, Demir set out for the the Garden of Hollow Times. While in the past the theme of “still life / nature morte” evoked abundance, wealth and splendor, today it corresponds more to the climate crisis, famine, poverty and collapse. The artist conveys this dilemma in his own language in the Garden of Hollow Times. The heavy impasto and deformations that the artist uses in his technique are other important elements that support the subject he tackles.
In his first exhibition, Şahin Demir had questioned the deformation created by the new world order on human beings. In the Garden of Hollow Times, he incorporates the destruction of nature into his thought process. The artist has long been focussed on global disasters that are becoming more and more frequent and the fact that ecological problems will gradually gain weight while directly affecting our lives. In his new series, Boş Zamanlar Bahçesi, Demir delivers a new body of work that expresses this distress in his signature aggressive manner. Boş Zamanlar Bahçesi can be seen at Sevil Dolmacı Art Gallery’s main venue Villa İpranosyan between December 16 2021 and January 15 2022.
