Mexican Artist Bosco Sodi’s First Solo Exhibition in Turkey Opens at Sevil Dolmacı Art Gallery

Sevil Dolmacı Istanbul is pleased to present Bosco Sodi’s solo exhibition ‘ The Silence of Form’. Taking take place between September 21 and October 28, the exhibition is the artist’s first one in Turkey.

Bosco Sodi creates his works in his numerous studios designed by world-renowned architects in Mexico, America and Europe. During the production, he uses the cultural richness, philosophies and the material opportunities offered by these countries and geographies. Clay, for example, almost forms the basis of the artist’s productions and it is a widely used material in the ancient civilisations of the Americas. Sodi prefers the imperfection, transcience and naturalness/randomness of the clay. He creates unique works based on randomness by mixing cellulose, sawdust and natural pigment, all of which he discovered while time-traveling to his own geography’s past. Clay being at the center of his practice, the artist takes his reference from the Japanese Wabi -Sabi philosophy, which respects originality and embraces naturalness.

The name of the exhibition, “The Silence of Form”, is related to the creation of works with natural materials and tones. At the same time, silence expresses a universal form of expression that does not require translation, emphasizing the artist’s philosophy and sources of inspiration.

In his productions, usually consisting of canvas and sculpture, Sodi creates works with a meditative process based on creative intuition and randomness by applying the mixture of natural materials by hand in layers. When the initially wet material starts to dry and cracks begin to form on the surface, Sodi gives the nature permission/time to complete the process. Thus, Sodi’s collaboration with nature turns into completely random and unpredictable productions.

Sodi deliberately names most of his productions Untitled, aiming to avoid bias and external connotations. In this way, the viewer has the opportunity to enter into a common dialogue with the artist.

Sevil Dolmacı Istanbul’s primary space Villa Ipranosyan building, which has a predominantly eclectic style with 19th century rococo decorations, offers a unique background in contrast to Sodi’s timeless, natural and raw materials. With “The Silence of Form” exhibition, the audience will witness a different experience captured by contrast.
