MICHAEL JOHN KELLY

Michael John Kelly looking for an object-ness in his abstractions, imagining those objects sympathetic to him with intelligence and personality. He uses many layers in his paintings, uses initial gestures, broad and wide brush strokes as an under painting. He then continues his creation process with layers of collages. He paints digitally on his ipad and then prints these digital paintings to canvases. After this, he tears them apart and collages his art onto his own art. These undergoing layers and digital transformations create something totally new “I chase what might remain sublime in an ever increasingly chaotic world” he says. Synthesizing those moments from personal and pop-cultural vocabularies of mid-century abstractionists and science fiction. Anime and video games and Willem de Kooning blended into a post-punk wall of sound.
