ARTIST / Artist
Cody Choi is a visual artist and cultural theorist born in Seoul, Korea, during the early 1960s, a time when the country was recovering from the trauma of war and experiencing rapid economic growth. Growing up amidst the social turbulence of Korea’s modernization and witnessing the country’s fast development into the 1980s, Choi eventually chose to move to the United States. As an Asian artist living and working in the U.S., he faced and struggled with Western discourses and the stereotypes attached to his Asian cultural identity. Choi represented Korea at the 2017 Venice Biennale and is a prominent figure in the contemporary art world. He currently splits his time between Seoul and New York. His work has been showcased in numerous solo and group exhibitions across Europe, the U.S., and Asia, including the traveling retrospective Cody Choi: Culture Cuts (2015-2017) and his participation in the Korean Pavilion at the 2017 Venice Biennale. Choi is also the author or co-author of several notable books, such as Cody Choi: Culture Cuts (König Books, 2015), Topography of 20th Century Culture (Culturegrapher, 2010), Topography of Contemporary Culture (Culturegrapher, 2006), and others.
