Robert Janitz, born in 1962 in Alsfeld, Germany, is an artist whose practice spans painting and visual language. He currently lives and works between Mexico City and New York. Janitz studied Art History and Sanskrit at the University of Marburg, Germany. From 1994 to 2008, he taught at the University of Paris VIII and the Higher School of Fine Arts in Cherbourg.
Janitz first gained recognition with his solo exhibition at Galerie Valleix in 1996 and has since held over thirty solo shows worldwide, including in cities such as Paris, Berlin, New York, Los Angeles, Brussels, Istanbul, Seoul, and Mexico City. He made his debut in the Latin American art scene with a simultaneous program in Mexico City. Recent exhibitions include Casa Gilardi (2021), König Gallery in Berlin (2020), Kunstmuseum Winterthur, Switzerland (2019), and CANADA, New York (2018). His upcoming exhibitions include the MAZ Museum in Guadalajara and Museo Anahuacalli in Mexico City (2022).
Janitz’s solo exhibitions include his first in Turkey, Labyrinth at Sevil Dolmaci Art Gallery (2021), and a solo exhibition at Canada NY Gallery in December 2021. In 2022, he will present new works in a solo show at König Gallery Seoul. His artistic practice continues to evolve, incorporating a visual vocabulary he began developing in Turkey.
His monographic publication Made in New York was published by Distanz Verlag in 2020. Janitz’s works have been featured in notable publications such as Contemporary Painting (Thames & Hudson, 2021) and Frozen Gesture (Hirmer, 2019). His work is part of significant collections, including the Carole Server Collection, Collezione Maramotti, Hall Art Foundation, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Represented by galleries like Canada (NY), Sevil Dolmaci (Istanbul), König (Berlin, London, Seoul), and Saenger Galería (Mexico City), Janitz’s art continues to captivate audiences worldwide. After living in New York for over a decade, Janitz has made Mexico City his home since 2020.
