PETER HALLEY

Peter Halley (b.1953)

Born in New York in 1953, Halley is mostly known for his geometric paintings.

For over twenty-five years, Peter Halley’s geometric paintings have embarked on a relationship game that he calls “prisons” and “cells”, reflecting the ever-increasing geometricalization of the social sphere. Inspired by New York’s gridded city plan and the isolation of the human inside, he imagines the abstract shape as a barred prison cell connected to the outside world via electronic communication. An author and teacher, Halley worked in painting and printmaking at Yale University’s School of the Arts from 2002 to 2011. He currently works and lives in New York.
