Now What

Sevil Dolmacı Art Gallery is pleased to present American artist Michael John Kelly’s first solo exhibition in Turkey, between December 16, 2022 and January 20, 2023. The exhibition titled “Now What” will include 20 or so works that the artist produced in Istanbul, as part of Sevil Dolmacı Art Residency.

Kelly received his Master’s degree in painting and drawing from UCLA, one of the prestigious universities in the USA, in 2013. He reflects today’s “noisy” and “chaotic” world in his works, inspired by the abstract expressionist artists that emerged in the mid-20th century. He describes his works as “Anime and video games and Willem de Kooning blended into a post-punk wall of sound.”

Most recently, Michael John Kelly was represented by Gavlak Gallery and participated in solo and group exhibitions in many galleries and museums in Utah, Los Angeles, Berlin, Miami, Basel and New York. For his exhibition in Istanbul, Kelly has prepared a selection of 20 works by bringing together his past personal experiences as well as his experiences in Istanbul, combining different media such as oil paintings, works on paper as well as works on mirrors.

“Now What” can be seen at Sevil Dolmacı Art Gallery’s main venue Villa Ipranosyan between December 16, 2022 and January 20, 2023.
